Research Programs

  • Experimental Economics The Experimental Economics Program is the largest in North Carolina and one of the strongest anywhere. Six experimental faculty at Appalachian are currently engaged in experimental research that investigates and simulates policy issues ranging from environmental resource management to public finance and tax policies. Last year, laboratory research accounted for nearly 100 sessions in the Appalachian Experimental Economics Laboratory (AppEEEL).
  • Environment & Energy The Environment & Energy Program engages over 15 faculty members from across the Appalachian campus. The program is affiliated with the Appalachian Research Institute for Environment, Energy and Economics and provides policy research and analysis for the Appalachian Energy Center.
  • Economic Development CERPA's Economic Development Program facilitates research and policy analysis that promotes higher standards of living and improved economic and social conditions. The program maintains a set of WNC initiatives that focus on the issues and needs of Western North Carolina, such as the WNC Economic Index and the WNC Data Center.
  • Fiscal Policy & Public Finance The Fiscal Policy and Public Finance Program investigates policy issues related to local, state and federal taxation and spending. The Internal Revenue Service has funded experimental studies to investigate issues such as individual services and tax compliance.
